In Memory

Lee Mitchell - Class Of 1972

Lee Mitchell, 61, of Marriott-Slaterville, UT peacefully left his life and rejoined his loved ones on Thursday, December 17, 2015.

He was born July 18, 1954 in Ogden, Utah to LeRoy and Lenora (Campbell) Mitchell of Clinton.  Lee graduated from Clearfield High School, where he ran the mile in track, and went on to pursue his vocation as a skilled carpet and flooring installer.

Lee will be remembered best for his unmistakable, infectious laugh and smile, which mirrored his zest for life.  He was known for his uninhibited, fun-loving spirit and characteristic one-liners such as, “I’d do it” and “That’s a spicy meatball! (with Italian accent).  It often came as no surprise to learn Lee had embarked on some kind of impromptu adventure, once even deciding on a whim to drive cross country, living out of his Datsun B210.  Hiking, biking, running, and weight training, anything requiring feats of strength, were his favorite activities. Lee’s love of competition steered him to the sports of handcar racing and Scottish Highland games.  He became a state champion in the caber toss in both Utah and Washington, and also competed in the hammer throw, weight throw, and sheaf events.  His passion for Scottish heavy athletics honored both of his parents’ ancestry.  In fashion, as in most things, Lee marched to the beat of his own drum, accessorizing his kilt with brightly striped knee socks. Right up to his final days Lee lived life to the fullest and on his own terms.  His last wish was to visit Scotland, which he was able to achieve with the assistance of family members.  Nothing made Lee happier than the simple pleasures in life: time with family, good food, and humor.  He was always there to cheerfully lend a hand to family and friends whenever and wherever he was needed.  To his loved ones, Lee meant far more than he may have ever realized; he generously filled the role of older brother, father figure, mentor, trusted friend, and fellow adventurer.  For that, he forever claims a special place in all our hearts.

Lee is survived by two brothers, Gene (Carol) Mitchell, Layton; Don Mitchell; one sister, Margy (Wayne) Warner, Roy; and many adoring nieces/nephews and grandnieces/nephews.  Lee was preceded in death by his parents; oldest brother, Larry; sister, Annette Rule; and nephew Larry Mitchell.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Clinton Cemetery.

The family would like to express a special thanks to all the nurses, doctors, and caregivers who gave Lee such good care during his final weeks.
