Don B. Thurgood - Class Of 1967

Don B. Thurgood, age 49, passed away Monday, March 8, 1999 at the Ogden Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Don was born March 27, 1949 in Ogden, Utah, a son of Ben Alvin and LaRene Moore Thurgood. He married Kathryn Carter, June 23, 1971 in Salt Lake City. They later divorced. He married Christy L. Goddard, July 10, 1991 in the Ogden LDS Temple.Don was a lifelong resident of Syracuse. He was a Criminalist for the Utah State Crime Lab. He graduated from Clearfield High School, and earned degrees in Criminalistics and Psychology from Utah State and Weber State Universities. He also attended the FBI Academy and the Forensic Drug Identification School. He has been in Forensic State and Local Organization for eight years. He belonged to the International Association Identification where he served as President from 1997-1998. He loved agriculture. He belonged to the state and local levels of agriculture for 18 years. He worked for Sunset Sport Center for eight years and R.C. Willey for five years. He was a member of the LDS Church where he was currently serving in the High Priest Group Leadership, for the past three years. He taught the youth for nine and one half years and held teacher positions for two years. Surviving are his loving wife, Christy L. Thurgood; two sons, Kirk D. (Shannon) Thurgood, Layton; Eric D. Thurgood, Syracuse; two daughters, Marissa T. (John) Skiby, Layton; Rachel A. Thurgood, Syracuse; two granddaughters; also surviving are his parents, Ben A. (Donna) Thurgood, Syracuse; his parents-in-law, Norman and Rea Goddard, Salt Lake City; five brothers, Larry (Jean) Thurgood, St. Anthony, ID; Ross (Carol) Thurgood, and Paul (Kathy) Thurgood, all of Syracuse; Scott Smith, Roy; Steve Smith, Roy; sister, Stacy (Keith) Tallay, Orem; sister-in-law, Cheri Kearl, Clearfield; brothers-in-law, Mike (Debbie) Goddard, and Pat (Tina) Goddard, all of Salt Lake City; Steve (Belinda) Goddard, Grantsville; also his dog, Brookie. He was preceded in death by his mother, LaRene M. Thurgood, and his grandparents on both sides of the family. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 12, 1999 at the Lindquist Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd. with David Benard officiating. Friends and family may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Friday 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
