In Memory

Marcus Blackett Garrett

Our beloved Father, Marcus Blackett Garrett, was called home on September 14, 2017.  Marcus was born in Nephi, Utah on March 19, 1925.  He was the fourth of nine children born to Brigham Floyd and Norma Blackett Garrett.  Marcus grew up in Nephi and lived there throughout his youth.  He was a hard worker helping his father and mother in the garden and taking care of the family’s animals during the great depression.  This gift carried on as he raised animals and tended to his own garden throughout most of his life.  Marcus was physically strong and he had great athletic ability.  He excelled in basketball and was an All-State basketball player his junior year at Juab High School.  His senior year of High School, however, he was not able to play.  Marcus was drafted into the US Army Air Corps during World War II.  Basketball was put on hold, and while Marcus’s classmates walked down the aisle to receive their High School diplomas, Marcus was serving his country.  His diplomas came in the mail.

After his return home from the war, Marcus met Enid Garvene Faux, a beautiful girl from Moroni, Utah.  She caught his eye and captured his heart.  Marcus and Garvene were married on September 4, 1947 in the Manti Temple.  Marcus and Garvene were married for almost 70 years before her death in June of 2017.

Marcus attended the University of Utah and Utah State University graduating as an Aggie in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.  Marcus taught High School throughout his career.  He taught physical education, driver’s education, general math, and business math.  He coached several different high school sports, including football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and track.  His favorite sport to coach was basketball, which he coached for 24 years.  His success in coaching basketball was not just winning three State Basketball Championships, but in molding young men.  He taught and coached at Roosevelt High School then Uintah High School.  A few years later, Marcus and Garvene moved their family back to his hometown of Nephi.  He coached basketball at Juab High and won back to back State Championships, the first in 1959 and again in 1960.  In 1960, he was offered the head basketball coaching position at a new school, Clearfield High.  Marcus coached there for 14 years.  While coaching the Clearfield Falcons, they won 2nd Place in the State Basketball Championship in 1964, a State Championship in 1967 and a State Consolation Championship in 1965 and 1970.  Marcus was also the Athletic Director at Clearfield High and the Director of Recreation for Clearfield City for several years.  In 2014, he was honored to be inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame for his success as a coach.

Marcus and Garvene raised their family in Syracuse and lived there for 36 years.  They moved to West Point in 1999.  Marcus and Garvene were honored in 2014 by West Point City to be the Grand Marshalls for the 4th of July parade.  In 2015, they moved from West Point to Fairfield Village in Layton.

Marcus served faithfully in the LDS Church as an Elders Quorum President, Bishops Counselor, Bishop, Stake High Counselor, and an Ogden Temple worker for 8 years.  Together, Marcus and Garvene served an LDS mission in the England Leeds Mission.

Marcus was a leader and a doer.  He was always quick to get things done.  Nieces and nephews love Uncle Marcus because of his fun and playful personality.  He was admired and respected by many and will be dearly missed.  Marcus would say the best team he coached was his family.  Coach, we will miss your big booming voice and heart!

Marcus was preceded in death by his wife Garvene, granddaughter Tamree Allen, his parents, brother Jack, Carl, Verl, Clyde, and two sister-in-laws, Dorothy and Carolyn Garrett.  He is survived by his six children Marlene (Gerry) Allen, Gaylen (Leann) Garrett, Loralee (Chad) Reid, Lynn (Linda) Garrett, Phil (Kenna) Garrett, Larry (Stephanie) Garrett, 25 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and brothers Kenneth, Richard, Michael, and sister Bonnie Smith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the West Point Utah Lakeside Stake Center, 855 N. 4000 W., West Point, Utah.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
