YOUR FAVORITE TEACHER AND WHY

JAMES RUTHERFORD - ENGLISH LIT.

THE SUBJECT MATTER HAD A LOT TO DO WITH IT. I'VE BEEN AN ON-AGAIN OFF-AGAIN WRITER SINCE GRADE SCHOOL AND I ENJOYED ENGLISH POETS AT THE TIME. MR. RUTHERFORD WAS A GREAT STORY TELLER AND HE HAD NO TROUBLE KEEPING OUR ATTENTION. THE ONLY STORY I REMEMBER TO THIS DAY WAS A PERIOD OF TIME HE SPENT IN ENGLAND HANGING OUT AT ONE OF THE UNIVERSITIES. HE HAD LISTENED TO SIMON AND GARFUNKLE PLAYING OUTDOORS ON THE LAWN FOR A SMALL GROUP OF STUDENTS. A FREE AND INFORMAL CONCERT. TO THIS DAY PAUL SIMON IS MY FAVORITE POET. I GOT A "B" FOR MY GRADE AND I DON'T REMEMBER DOING ANY HOMEWORK TO EARN IT.

ONE MORE THING, AND THIS WAS IMPORTANT. I PLAYED IN A BAND IN HIGH SCHOOL AND I DID A LOT OF PARTYING. I NEVER GOT INTO TROUBLE WHEN I FELL ASLEEP IN HIS CLASS, AND I DID THAT OFTEN. HE SEEMED TO UNDERSTAND.

Dianna Page Farr/ Class of '63

My favorite teacher was Ivan Cornia.  He has been a great example to me beyond my high school years.  Mr Cornia is a quiet person and recently I found out "how quiet".  He was a man I would love to sit at his feet and learn much from him.

Mr. Cornia took a personal interest in you and your abilities.  I remember him taking me out in the hall and  showing me the color of shadows.  In class he always encouraged me to try harder and to face a new challenge and not give up.  Maybe I am not a great artist but because of him my life has been blessed with art!!!!  Thank you Mr. Cornia.

Another favorite was Frank Read.  I didn't have the opportunity to have him as a teacher at Clearfield High but I did have him in 5th and 6th grades. He was a great fly catcher and he was also a really great history teacher.  I learned more about history at 11 and 12 than I ever did in college.  I have loved and had an interest in history ever since and it wasn't the watered down distorted version the students get today.

It is a wonderful blessing to our lives the gifts our teachers gave us.  It was more than just the subjects, it was their personal interest and encouragement that meant the most!

Thanks to all the teachers that directed out lives!

Major Kit Workman - Aerospace (AFJROTC).

Taught us what to expect in military life before actually joining it.  Encouraged us to do our personal best without making us feel pressured to meet a specific grade.  Provided a safe comfortable hang-out for Students during lunch breaks in the back of the ROTC class room.

I also use a lot of the military protocols I learned in my "Star Trek" Role Playing Games for Starfleet Officers.

I ditto the favorite of Mr. Cornia.  As both a master at art, he challenged me to do my very best.  He was one of the people that inspired me to accomplish things when times were the hardest.

I liked Grant Steele. I had a biology class with him. I didn't know until years later what he meant when he told me science might be a natural fit for me. He encouraged my curiosity in a way no other teacher did until much later.

Since I was a girl from the small town of West Point, I was fairly shy.  I loved to study and I really wanted to be able to be brave enough to participate in school activities.  I took a class from Mr. Grondell.  He taught English and Journalism.  Journalism gave me an opportunity to talk to people and participate in civic functions.  He taught us the importance of knowing what was going on in the world.  He pushed us to write in a concise manner and to watch for events that could make news.  He encouraged me to be brave and have confidence.  I feel that as I left his class I could face the world and be an active participant.

I want to add my "thank you" for the lovely day on Saturday. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it possible and and special "thank you" to all of you who thought it was important enough to attend. It was just wonderful to see everyone and to hear about your lives and experiences. It makes me smile just thinking that such crazy young people turned out to be so GREAT!!
