Gary D. Steed - Class Of 1972

Gary D. Steed, 61, our wonderful Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend, and Coach passed away unexpectedly at his home in Layton on Thursday, August 18, 2016.

He was born on September 21, 1954 in Salt Lake City to Carol Ann Simmons and Stanley Steed.  Gary was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and of the LDS church.  He grew up in Clearfield and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1972, where he was a member of the FFA and lettered as a member of the Golf team.  Gary began his long time career in 1970 at the family business Simmons Auto Repair in Layton, where he was a highly regarded mechanic for nearly 40 years.

Gary married Linda Janell Sortor on September 9, 1974 and they had two children together and later divorced in 1999.  Gary had been a Layton resident all of his adult life.  He always made the holidays extra special for his family.  He had a very funny sense of humor and loved to tease!  He especially enjoyed watching all of his grandchildren’s activities and would be upset if he had to miss them.  He also enjoyed camping, hunting, playing cards, bowling, listening to sports talk radio, Las Vegas trips, going to Beez Café, and golfing with his buddies every Sunday.

Gary loved sports and was a fan of many teams and he loved collecting sports memorabilia.  Some of his favorites were the New York Yankees, Utah Jazz, San Francisco 49ners, BYU, and Weber State.  One of his true passions in life was coaching kids.  He started coaching youth football, basketball, and baseball teams in 1988, and won many games.  Then in 1994 Gary started his 22 year career as a Coach at Layton High School.  Alongside Coach Robert Ferneau they built a great program.  Gary always had a soft spot in his heart for his baseball kids; he impacted many young men’s lives on and off the field.  Gary was the ultimate jokester and the king of unique one-liners with the kids, coaches, and even the parents of his teams, but they loved and respected him greatly.  He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all that knew him.

Gary is survived by his two children, Joshua D. Steed and his wife Tonya, Hooper; Melissa (Missy) May Anderson and her husband Tye, Layton; his 6 grandchildren Wyatt, JC, Mylee, Peyton (Bubba), Laramie, and Brecklynn; his 2 sisters, Cindy Dobyns (Gary), Kaysville; and Candy Barnett (Ron), St. George; his niece and nephews; and all of his close friends.  Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Carol Ann Steed; grandparents, Ronald and Thelma Steed, Lyle D. and Ruby Simmons, as well as his nephew Jason H. Lewis.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road in Layton.  Friends may visit family Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
