In Memory

Douglas Wayne Smedley - Class Of 1967

Douglas Wayne Smedley, 66, of Layton, Utah, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 11, 2015, with his loving wife of 44 years by his side.  He had experienced heart and lung challenges for the last six years.

Doug was born December 6, 1948, in Ogden, Utah.  He spent his early years growing up in Syracuse, Utah which was then a close, small community filled with family and friends.  He attended elementary school in Syracuse and Jr. High and High School in Clearfield, Utah.  He also attended Weber State College and later Weber ATC to complete his electrical studies.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in the Northern states mission.  When he returned he met his eternal sweetheart, Beverly Ann Bright and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 25, 1971.  Two weeks later, he began his military service of six years with the Utah National Guard.

In 1975, Doug and Bev, along with Doug’s parents, and family, created Clarinda Subdivision in East Layton, building homes on Maxine Drive, where they raised their family.  He loved the many friends he made throughout the neighborhood and his service in many church callings over the years.  He was always ready with a joke or piece of candy, usually both, for everyone he met.  He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family.

Doug worked in his family’s company all of his working life. In 1975, he helped move the company to East Layton when it became Wayne T Smedley & Associates.  He was a certified HVAC Specialist, a Licensed Electrician, and Vice President of the company until he retired.

Doug is survived by his wife, Beverly, and five children: Nathan Douglas Smedley and his wife Amy Christenson Smedley of Conroe, Texas; Amber Lyn Smedley Colledge and her husband Josh Colledge of North Ogden; Adam Wayne Smedley of West Point; Robyn Ann Smedley Paskett and her husband Jeremy Paskett of North Ogden; and Joshua Laron Smedley of Layton.  Doug also leaves behind 13 grandchildren who he loved dearly: Sarah, Grace, Ty and Steve Smedley; Jefferson, Sydney, Jaxxon, Tylah and Wilson Colledge; Kaylee and Brock Smedley; and Elise and Ryan Paskett.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the members of Doug’s Intermountain Hospice team, especially Carolyn, Jeff, and Dr. Bentley McEntire, who have taken such great care of him for the past three years.  Your dedication and service will never be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 at the mortuary.

Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
